Tricep Pressdowns
Perfect Your Tricep Press Down: Essential Tips for Maximum Gains
Welcome to the Performance Science International instructional video series! In today’s session, we’re focusing on the tricep press down, a fundamental exercise for tricep development that many people unknowingly perform incorrectly. By following the guidance in this video, you’ll learn how to optimize your form to maximize muscle engagement and avoid common injuries.
What You’ll Learn in This Video:
- Proper Hand Positioning: A small adjustment can make a big difference! Many people mistakenly hold the bar in their fingers, which shifts the stress to the elbows instead of the triceps. In this video, I demonstrate how rotating your hand forward and keeping your grip on top of the bar shifts the stress to where it belongs—directly on the triceps.
- Preventing Elbow Injuries: Holding the bar incorrectly can lead to inflammation of the ulnar nerve, commonly known as tennis elbow, and in severe cases, may even require surgery. By correcting your grip as shown, you can prevent these issues and protect your elbows from unnecessary strain.
- Executing the Perfect Repetition: Learn the mechanics of a proper tricep press down:
Start by gripping the bar with your hands on top, avoiding any rotation of the bar.
As you press down, your wrist will bend naturally to keep your hand on top of the bar, ensuring continuous stress on the triceps throughout the movement.
Avoid letting your hand slip into your fingers, which compromises the effectiveness of the exercise.
Beginner’s Tip: If you’re new to this exercise, starting with a straight bar might be challenging on the wrists, but it’s an excellent way to train yourself to maintain the correct hand position throughout the movement. Mastering this technique will not only improve your tricep press down but also enhance all your other tricep exercises.
Why This Matters:
The tricep press down, when performed correctly, is a simple yet powerful exercise for building strong, well-defined triceps. The tips and techniques shared in this video will ensure that you’re getting the most out of your workouts while minimizing the risk of injury.
